Beyond eating a healthy diet, children need daily physical activity. Limiting television, computer, and video games is essential. Lead by example and show children that exercising is fun. Exercising as a family is a great way to spend quality time together.

An advocate for children's health

Dana Laake, RDH, MS, LDN is a licensed nutritionist, talk show host, and educator. In her practice, Dana Laake Nutrition, she provides preventive and therapeutic medical nutrition services to adults and children.

This excellent resource for creating and maintaining healthy eating habits provides many great gluten-free and casein-free recipes and healthy substitutions. The authors share details about how and why the diet works and give many helpful tips and testimonials from parents and children.

Fruity Good Shake

• 1¼ cups rice milk
• ½ glass crushed ice
• 1 tablespoon rice powder
• 1 tablespoon coconut milk

Add 1 handful of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries or a combination.

Blend the milk, crushed ice, rice powder, and coconut milk in a blender. Add the fruit. Blend the mixture at high speed until smooth and thick. Pour into glasses and serve immediately.
