What Pushes YOUR Holiday Stress Buttons?

Let’s face it… this can be a hectic and stressful time of year. As if there wasn’t enough going on normally, now you’ve got relatives visiting, kids going crazy, extra chores and cooking, gifts to buy and wrap, decorating and donating and dozens more things to do, all on top of this difficult economic time.

Before it all becomes overwhelming, take a moment to check out our handy tips for keeping stress at bay in the coming weeks…

Right now: BREATHE. Deep breathing is a great way to reduce stress, help yourself relax, and increase your energy level. It’s easy to do and can be done in any quiet spot. Sit comfortably and take a deep breath through your nose, counting slowly from 1 to 4 as you breathe in. Exhale through your mouth as you count down from 4 to 1. Repeat 20 times.

Get moving. Physical activity can help reduce or even prevent the effects of stress. Make time for at least 30 minutes of exercise, three times per week. (More is better!) Walk, run, bike, hike, dance — whatever you enjoy — just do it!

Find a furry friend. Studies have shown that the simple act of petting a cat or dog can reduce blood pressure, and animals have a natural knack for showing us how to relax and enjoy ourselves. Spend some quality time with your four-legged friends and you’ll be reminded of the really important things in life.

Eat well. Start with a good breakfast and eat well-balanced, nutrient-dense foods the rest of the day. Fruits, vegetables and nuts are great snacks, chock-full of vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats that help nourish the nervous system. Protein-rich foods like fish, poultry, eggs, and beans will also give you sustained energy throughout your day.

Reduce caffeine and sugar. They may provide a temporary energy boost, but you’ll soon come crashing down and feel more tired than before. Try natural energy boosters such as an apple with nut butter or a protein smoothie instead.

Sleep. Adequate sleep is vital to your well-being. Studies have shown that lack of sleep increases your stress level by interfering with your ability to concentrate and think clearly.

Get your “me time.” Set aside time just for yourself, for rest, relaxation, and FUN. Create a list of your top 10 favorite activities, things that you truly enjoy and that help you combat stress. This is your time to take a break from all responsibilities and recharge your batteries. Turn off the TV and relax!

Learn time management. When you’re stretched too thin and running behind, it’s hard to stay calm and focused. Use schedules and calendars as tools to regain control of your most valuable asset.

Supplement. A good quality multivitamin and omega-3 supplement can help strengthen your body and support your nervous system.

Miriam Peters is a native of Morocco, but when you talk with her you’d never guess her first language was French. Raised mostly in New York City, Miriam is a graduate of the College of Pharmacy at St. John’s University in Queens.

Soon after becoming a pharmacist, Miriam became disenchanted with pharmaceutical companies and the FDA. Every day, she was hearing the frustrations of people struggling with prescription side effects, and traditional pharmacy seemed like a big disappointment.

Miriam started looking for an avenue to help people deal with side effects, hopefully improving their health. She found her answer at Village Green Apothecary, where she can blend the best of traditional pharmacy with nutrition and alternative remedies. She also gets to fulfill her greatest passion, working with older people. In Miriam’s own words,

“I just focus on talking and listening to people, and making them feel better and happy. They’re so grateful, and they thank you so much! I find myself thinking, ‘Holy cow! I think I made a difference!’”

When she’s not at Village Green, Miriam is busy with her second job: mother of two. Max and Samantha, and Miriam’s husband John, are the lucky beneficiaries of one of Miriam’s other passions: cooking. Her favorite indulgence is pasta with tomato cream sauce.

To work off those delicious calories, Miriam is also a Tai Chi enthusiast and recommends this slow-moving form of exercise for everyone. “I love it! It takes a lot of balance, and teaches you to get out of stressful situations in a very calm manner. And it gives me loads of energy!”

Since she commutes from Vienna to Bethesda each day, Miriam is an avid listener of books on tape. Mysteries by James Patterson and thrillers by Daniel Silva are particular favorites for taking her mind off Beltway traffic.

At home, she reads cookbooks and — no surprise here — pharmacy books.
