NEWS FLASH: Bioidentical Hormones Can Help Menopausal Women

You may have seen a recent "Oprah" show about the benefits of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). Oprah will be addressing this topic again tomorrow (see details below). This breakthrough help for menopausal women is one of our specialties at Village Green. In fact, we routinely compound BHRT formulas every day.

Please read on and if BHRT sounds like it might help you, consider talking to your doctor about it for yourself. We'll be here to help!

Questions & Answers About BHRT

What is BHRT?
Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is the use of supplemental doses of hormones that have a chemical structure identical to the hormones that the human body naturally produces. BHRT can help treat symptoms of perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause.

How are BHRT treatments developed?
Prescriptions for BHRT are based on tests administered by your doctor. When your BHRT prescription is filled by a compounding pharmacy, a unique blend of hormones is created, tailored to your individual needs. There are also standardized (non-compounded) BHRT formulas available.

What are BHRT formulas made from?
Many bioidentical hormones are made from soybeans and wild yams, which contain natural compounds that are processed and made into identical replicas of hormones the body produces. (Contrast this to the drug Premarin, which is made from hormones extracted from horse urine.)

How is BHRT taken?
Bioidentical hormones can be supplied in a variety of formats including cream, suppository, pills or injections.

Why are people concerned about traditional hormone replacement therapy?
In 2002, the Women’s Health Initiative Study revealed evidence that the use of synthetic hormones in conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be associated with many health risks, including increased risk of breast cancer, coronary events, stroke, and blood clots.

Why do people choose BHRT?
Women and physicians often are opting for the use of BHRT because it matchs the structure and function of hormones produced in the body. Since bioidentical hormones are natural, your body can metabolize them as it was designed to do, and side effects are minimized.

BHRT provides the benefits of traditional HRT — without most of the unwanted side effects.

How can I learn more about BHRT?
If you missed the first “Oprah” show about BHRT, you can review it at this link: www.oprah.com/slideshow/oprahshow/20090114_tows_hormone

And “Oprah” will be featuring BHRT again on Thursday, January 29, discussing the issues with Suzanne Somers, an active supporter of bioidentical hormones. The episode will include a visit to a compounding pharmacy, providing viewers an up-close look at how compounding pharmacists prepare prescriptions customized for each patient
